After 2 12-hour flights and 2 1-hour flights, we landed in Cape Town. We are staying with family friends Ben and Hendrina Herbst, who have known Pelle's family for many years. Natives of South Africa, they have welcomed us into their home with warmth, good humor, and fabulous cooking.
After lunch in their lush garden, we headed out with Ben to the coast, driving to the far side of Cape Town to Hout Bay and Clifton Beach. Facing the incredible green ocean (the Southern Ocean? Indian Ocean?) with the granite and sandstone cliffs behind and hot sun bearing down, the fact that we had actually begun our trip finally began to sink in. We pinched ourselves more than once.
