A Meats Interlude

We were incredibly excited to move onto our next destination – Argentina! Good friends from Portland were meeting us in Buenos Aires and we knew this city of meats, wines, tango and a blend of Italian and South American cultures would not disappoint. It did not. (It also came with a surprising amount of dog poop on sidewalks – you are now forewarned!) Staying in the chic neighborhood of Palermo, we could basically walk and subway everywhere and so we did. With daily step counts above 10,000, we were free to taste every kind of empanada, cured meat, grilled meat, local beer, fernet cocktail, and wine we found. There may also have been some ice cream. There were definitely many laughs. We hit the usual sites, but the highlight was our asado grilling adventure with Frank at his beautiful house. He showed us street art and great shops around his hood before settling into his back yard to make our afternoon feast. Oh, how we ate. Too much. Then it was a lesson on mat...

A Wine Interlude

With the whole country of Argentina at our doorstep, and vast distances over which to get there, we elected for a few civilized days of wine-tasting in Mendoza. Spoiled as we are in Portland with the exceptional Willamette Valley, Columbia Valley and Walla Walla wine regions at our doorstep, visiting a new wine mecca was a real treat. With few crowds (Easter week = locals are on vacation), we dove into several bottles and wineries. We were surprised to learn that wine is not really a big deal with locals... Many younger people are into beer and cocktails and older people tend to stick with established bodegas that offer big wines for limited budgets. We suspect that Argentina's insane inflation rate (about 35%!) causes a lot of wine to be sent aboard for sale in foreign currencies.

Rural Bastimentos

A quick flight to Bocas del Toro (after a smooth, swift and pleasantly courteous Air Panama flight from the local Albrook airport) found us in Bocas Town searching for brekkie and a water taxi to Isla Bastimentos. Our top two guidebook-suggested cafes weren’t open, so we stumbled into any old place to get out of the hot sun and refuel. An anonymous omelet with fresh juice later, we bolted for our refuge at The Firefly , a fab little collection of bungalows on the sea side of Bastimentos. (The Air Bungalow there is heaven, so book it if it’s on offer!) Wandering the town of Old Bank, we dodged chickens and children, overlooked the piles of trash awash in the rocks beneath houses, bought ¢.85 beers, and wondered what Christopher Columbus et al thought about the place when he arrived in 1502. Diving the waters around the island with SCUBA 6 Eco Diving, we found beautiful corals and reef fish on a bit of a drift dive with good visibility (rather a rarity here, seems like)...
