Really, that stick is the least of your trouble

The little village where we stayed overnight during our kayak trip (more on that later) offered us a precious peek into the everyday life of rural Laotians -- and their animals. While wandering, we heard a ear-splitting screaming, going on and on at a high note that would turn any soprano green with envy.
Finally, the source of such keening was literally plopped at our feet...a fat hairy hog, readied for transport. He was then man-handled onto a scooter, his nose inches from the pavement. His owners climbed on back. We'd seen a similar sight in Vietnam (although it was a calf  strapped across the back of a scooter) and we knew where this hog was going.

Let's just say, he'd soon go from hog hell to hog heaven.
