In its role as crossroads for the world, Panama has absorbed
waves of immigrants and entrepreneurs. With respect to local culture and a few
key phrases in Spanish on our lips, we have been accepted as just another set
of people interested in this unusual place. Well, and also obviously as targets
for making an extra buck (e.g. $35 taxi ride from the airport instead of $20. Sigh, rookie mistake.)
Wandering through 2-3 story brick and stucco buildings from
the 1800s in Casco Viejo, we’ve found a blend of Panamanian flair with a
tropical French vibe. Music, color, and heat assault the senses. Heading into
modern Panama City, skyscrapers shimmer, traffic whirls, trash tumbles through
streets, and brand name shops fill windows. It’s been a good place to explore
for a couple days and regroup before our next leg. But more than 3 days would
probably be too much.
