In the land of make Belize

A total break from reality at the start of sabbatical #2 just felt right.  Unplug, unwind and unencumber ourselves of our usual routines seemed easy to do in a place like Caye Caulker, Belize. No cars, no worries, no cold weather in sight.

We guessed right. Meeting one of Denise’s sisters & her husband there, we found ourselves in a fab AirBnB south of the main town area. Biking around flat, chalky streets, we chowed local street food, marveled at the slow pace of life, and basked in the sun. We snorkeled and lounged by the pool with Belikins and G&Ts.
We went diving outside the reef at Esmeralda and Tackle Box through Black Durgon Dives. Forgiving confused seas and high swells to get there, we enjoyed the marine life and appreciated the professionalism of our dive guide Al and boat captain Andre. We saw morays, nurse sharks, black tip reef sharks, fan corals, and small reef fish. And dolphins! They were so mesmerizing to watch that Denise didn’t realize one had swum up next to her and only caught its eye for a second before it swam away with its friends.

We also took an excursion out to fish and snorkel through Tsunami Adventures. Conch, barracuda, snapper and grunts made for an excellent lunch. We were even visited by a big eagle ray snooping around for leftovers.

All too soon, time for the Burgers to return home (to a snowstorm and 30 degrees) and for us to head into the jungle... an unbelizeable start to our trip!
