A Wine Interlude

With the whole country of Argentina at our doorstep, and vast distances over which to get there, we elected for a few civilized days of wine-tasting in Mendoza. Spoiled as we are in Portland with the exceptional Willamette Valley, Columbia Valley and Walla Walla wine regions at our doorstep, visiting a new wine mecca was a real treat. With few crowds (Easter week = locals are on vacation), we dove into several bottles and wineries.

We were surprised to learn that wine is not really a big deal with locals... Many younger people are into beer and cocktails and older people tend to stick with established bodegas that offer big wines for limited budgets. We suspect that Argentina's insane inflation rate (about 35%!) causes a lot of wine to be sent aboard for sale in foreign currencies.
