More than 80% of the population of Australia live within 50 kilometers of the ocean. Now we know why! There are no proper words to describe the rich and varied colors of the bays, tidal pools and crashing surf. All at the same time, the water is turquoise, aqua, azure, aubergine, grass green, smokey grey, china blue, pale robin's egg.
And those clever Australians have made the most of their precious companion. Concrete pools nestle at the bottom of steep cliffs, offering an unparalleled day of swimming. Surfers head out enforce in all kinds of weather to find the perfect wave. Empty roads offering tantalizing glimpses of water meander behind grassy dunes.
Even dead Australians make the most of it. On the walk from Coogee Beach to Bondi Beach, which is probably the most scenic and enjoyable 2 hours you can spend along any coast any where in the world, this huge cemetery pops up out of no where. With a view like this, the dearly departed who believe in the afterlife are totally stoked.
On the 2 days that the rain removed itself from Sydney, each and every Sydneysider headed for a beach. We happened to choose Bondi for our resting place, practically bumping elbows with tanned and toned neighbors. But it was glorious.
It sparkles in the sun, soothes the eardrums, erupts over the rocks, hypnotizes the mind, steals surfboards, and suffuses the air with salt spray. Even in the cold mist that blanketed Sydney for most of our visit, the leaden sea was alive with ferries, kayaks, birds, fishing boats and whitecaps.
