Wanting a little different adventure during our week in Luang Prabang, we booked an overnight kayak trip on the Nam Ou. Turned out it was just us and 2 guides. We put in at a tiny collection of stilt houses off the road that runs along the river. I don't think that the kids who helped us down to the river had ever seen Westerners before. Their parents neither.
Our guides were great--knowledgeable about the region, skilled in the ways of the river, and quick to pull us out of the water (the rapids were surprisingly swift!). We stopped several times along the way to rest, eat and fish. As Pelle learned, net fishing takes very particular skill, especially when the quarry are itty bitty fishies that easily escape!
They made a nice dish for the guides (too boney for me) that night when we stopped for dinner and pitching our tent. We camped on a riverbank a quiet, cool night. Exhausted from the day kayaking in the hot sun, I slept early but woke with the fishermen and boats plying the river. The mist rising above the mountains and quiet movement of the water was breathtaking.
