We chose an inland route back to CT. Marked on the map as a “secondary road” we entered country of rich orange/red cliffs and crags and dusty green shrubs and trees. Pavement quickly gave way to packed earth with signs of civilization reducing to random people walking along the road and the odd house and farm in the valleys. It was here that we encountered our first really strange country experience…Rounding a bend toward the end of the asphalt, we narrowly avoided running over a woman and her 9-month old baby lying in the middle of the road. We swerved open-mouthed and she just stared at us unmoving. The rest of the drive was gorgeous with few cars or human speed bumps to mar the experience. It was a raw landscape under an expansive sky that is hard to find back in the States.
