Pelle’s assignment has been extended for a few more months,
and we are pumped to have a little bit more time here. But for the third time
in less than a year, we’ve had to move to a new apartment. The process has
definitely lost its allure. The first apartment offered the exciting unknown –
new city, new building, new view, new neighbors, new routines…We were very
eager to begin and all seemed very promising. Parts were wonderful – our
neighborhood in old George Town was fascinating with an excellent location; the
view was stunning, especially when sunset put on a show or rainstorms
descended; the gym and pool were inviting; Pelle’s commute was about as short
as it could get. But after a few months, we were tired of dealing with a seemingly
endless series of electrical problems, uncomfortable furniture, and a
vertigo-inducing, poorly-designed (or should I say not-at-all-designed??)
spiral up to the parking garage. Enter one unfortunate electrical fire, and
presto, we moved to a second apartment.
Located within the same building and owned by the same
landlord, we were a bit fearful that the same problems would arise, but
happily, no. The apartment had almost the same layout and much better
furniture, but lacked wiring trouble. So we kept what we liked about the
building and location, but were finally free of the tiresome issues. Oh, except
the swirling car ramp...
With the advent of Pelle’s work extension, we wondered what
to do about our apartment. Should we just extend our lease? Or did we want to
try a new neighborhood to further diversify our experience of the island? The first question was answered for us – the
landlord was suing the property management company for damages from the
electrical fire, so neither he, nor they, wanted to deal with the other party
any more than absolutely necessary. With us caught in the middle, it made sense
to move out. We were half-inclined to try a new area anyway, so we were game.
After viewing a surprising dirth of apartments – apparently
owners here do not like renting on sort-term leases – we found a big place in
an older building. The owners are very friendly and since the place had been
lived in before, we expect that the wiring is in good working order. (Of
course, further updates if not the case!) It is rather sparsely furnished for
its size, but it’s an end unit so has big windows on three sides. That means
it’s bright with wonderful natural light and the cross breeze in the morning is
gorgeous. Oh, and the parking spot is on the ground level! And there is storage
space for Olive on the ground level too – no more lugging her up and down in
the elevator trying not to bash into anyone.
So we have a nice new home for the next three months…definitely
more than enough time to see what I can do about finding new furniture
treasures!
More photos soon!
