The thrill of the hunt

I love buying presents for people and shipping them off unannounced. There are just so many treasures of all shapes and sizes to be found in Malaysia and the Southeast Asian countries we have visited! I just have to keep my mind and eyes open because paper stores, fabric depots, supermarkets, craft shops, even temples offer the unique, the tasty, the mildly bizarre. With four siblings, two siblings-in-law, parents, parents-in-law, nieces & nephews, a bestest girlfriend, and good friends scattered around the world, I have lots of places to which to send these delights. I'm not sure if my recipients are so delighted, but isn't it the thought that counts?!

These bowls, for example, are made of many types of wood native to Malaysia. Hand turned with glossy polish, one would be perfect in a kitchen brimming with Munising Bowls. Perhaps sent with a few spice packets for assam laksa or curry mee?
This pillow cushion is made in India by artisans who piece together fabric remnants and old saris. Cotton or silk, large patterned or patchwork, any one would lend a cheerful tropical flair to any living room. Perhaps one that especially leans toward a light beach theme?
Even this roof tile has a place in my gift lexicon! Sold at the largest Buddhist Temple in Southeast Asia, the tile will be used on one of the new buildings in the complex. Not something everyone would appreciate, but a certain big brother of mine who is a specialist in home construction (roofs in particular), may feel happy to have the good karma coming his way.
